FAQs

We strive to place new residents in a residence on the campus in which they study.
Returning students we attempt to place where they wish to reside. However, this is not always possible due to space limitations.  

New students will apply through the Nelson Mandela University Central Admissions Office;
Returning students will apply on line via the student portal.

If you are travelling by plane:

• Hire taxi cab from Port Elizabeth Airport.

If you are travelling by bus:

• Most buses disembark at terminus at Greenacres or Strand Street Central, and from there you can hire a taxi to campus or the next bus to campus

If you are travelling by train:

• Disembark from the train at Port Elizabeth Station.
• Walk the short distance to the Taxi rank and hire a taxi from there.
• Be on the alert for thieves and con-men that often target students laden with luggage.

We strive to place students on the campus where they will attend most of their lectures.
Students doing diploma or certificate programmes would mostly be accommodated on North and Second Avenue Campus i.e. Lebombo Residence (females), Letaba Residence (males).
Oceana Residence on Second Avenue have facilities for both males and females and where appropriate student would be placed on George Campus
 

We strive to place all first year students in the appropriate residence closest to where they would attend most their lectures.
Degree programme students would therefore be accommodated mostly on South Campus i.e. Melodi Residence (females) and Xanadu Residence (males) and where appropriate at George Campus
 

Nelson Mandela University have 24 hour security on campus, but unfortunately occasional incidents of theft do take place if students are careless.

1. Student cards are used to gain access to campuses and all of the residences.
2. Security guards are posted around the Nelson Mandela University campuses and at residence security kiosks
3. Security guards are available to chaperone students within the Campus.
4. A scheduled transport shuttle service links all campuses during office hours.
5. Security is, however, dependent on students playing their part, so it is IMPORTANT that -

• When walking at night on campus, do not walk alone - walk with a friend.
• When you leave your room, please lock the door.
• Students are encouraged to insure and to take care of their own possessions.

You will need to provide your own:

• bed linen (including pillows)
• blankets/duvet
• towels
• iron
• kettle and coffee mug (kettle not needed at Oceana)

In self-catering residences only, will you require:

• cooking utensils (not needed at Post Graduate Student Village – South Campus)
• crockery and cutlery (not needed at Post Graduate Student Village – South Campus)
• Food

If you are not assigned to a self-catering residence you will be required to subscribe to the Meal Management System (MMS) as cooking in bedrooms in prohibited

You may bring the following, subject to certain restrictions:

• a small microwave oven* (subject to inspection for safety)
• TV set* (max size 54 cm - but beware - if the noise from your TV becomes a nuisance, the set may be confiscated until the end of the year)
• portable radio (beware of noise regulations)
• personal computer
• bar fridge

University provides fridges for students in self-catering residences

• pets
• inflammable liquids
• electric hotplates or paraffin stoves
• overnight visitors
• fire arms and/or fireworks
• Alcohol and narcotics

All rooms are equipped with the following:

• bed and mattress
• desk
• chair
• Built in cupboard
• bookcase / shelving
• curtains
• Waste Paper Bin
